I am responding to your letter in support of transit funding.

You may know that as Chair of the Mass Transit Committee – and as a transit rider – I have worked non-stop on this issue for three years. I predicted back then that we would have to confront the issue of long-term transit funding rather than continue to apply temporary band-aids. We have avoided the issue until now because funding measures inevitably mean new taxes or fees to support the increasing costs of transit operations.

Now there is a transit funding crisis, and the state must take immediate action. After months of negotiations and deliberations, I am proud to announce that I have introduced House Amendment #3 to Senate Bill 572, a 231-page comprehensive amendment that will resolve the transit problems facing our region. The legislation presents a fair, equitable and far-ranging approach to funding for our transit system while demanding accountability and reform. The legislation will also provide support to downstate transit. If you would like to read about the specifics of the legislation, a fact sheet is available on my website at www.juliehamos.org.

The General Assembly and the Governor must enact this legislation by mid-September to avoid drastic service cuts, fare increases and layoffs. I am working hard to make sure this happens.
